First, some background:

Meg-ohm testing is the most effective test of the relative "health" of a motor.  This testing process measures the quality of the insulation within the motor windings.  Electrical resistance is measured in ohms, and in the case of motor testing, the measurement is in "meg-ohms", that is ohms x millions.

The quality of the insulation within the motor degrades with time, "wear and tear", vibration, heat, power surges, contamination, etc.  The insulation resistance is also reduced by the addition of moisture (a good conductor), airborn chemicals, and other factors such as dust and dirt.

Meg-ohm testing reveals when the motor is safe to start, and when it requires maintenance (which is always cheaper than repairs or replacement.)

  1. MEG-alert Motor Guard is permanently installed on the motor or the motor starting circuit.  Permanent installation means that the electrician does NOT need to access the high voltage wiring to manually conduct the test.  The testing is totally "hands off".  Manual testing labor costs are completely eliminated, and this can equal several hours per motor - over and over again!  Also eliminated are all the associated testing expenses for test equipment, safety equipment, NFPA 70E, and OSHA compliance.  MEG-alert Motor Guard eliminates the hassles and dangers assoicated with manual motor testing - as shown above - including exposure to high voltages, arc flash, and fire.

MEG-alert Motor Guard displays test results on an easy-to-read dial that does not require an electrician to interpret.  An intuitive "green-yellow-red" scale depicts the exact meg-ohm readings and the relative resistance levels.  The numerical levels can be recorded to track motor condition over time.  These levels can be easily tracked several times a day if desired.  The resulting proactive and predictive maintenance program will allow for timely maintenance and scheduled motor reconditioning (at a cost of 10% - 25% of motor replacement.)  Meg-ohm readings can even be transmitted to remote monitoring sites in another part of the facility - or even another state!

MEG-alert Motor Guard can be configured to provide "pre-alarm" resistance levels that warn the maintenance staff that service of the motor is required on a scheduled, non-crisis basis.  This resistance level is preset at IEEE standards, but can be adjusted to the individual customer's unique requirements.  The pre-alarm is indicated by a measurement in the yellow range on the permanent meg-ohm meter, and is typically enhanced with a yellow blinking LED.  Remote notificationis also an option.

MEG-alert Motor Guard continuously and automatically tests the internal meg-ohm resistance levels of the motor.  In contrast to widely spaced manual spot checks, Motor Guard never stops.  Whenever the motor is offline, 24/7 it is being monitored - right up to the moment before startup.  This addresses the weakness in a manual testing program when performed at any time other than immediately prior to startup.  Motor Guard answers the key question: Is the motor safe to start, or will it burn out?  Since up to 95% of burnouts occur under the added stress of startup, Motor Guard provides invaluable protection.
  5. MEG-alert Motor Guard tests at full operating voltage.  It accomplishes nothing to test at some lesser voltage, especially when startup failures occur due to high voltage stress.  Motor Guard uses a patented current-limited, non-destructive DC output to test and monitor motors.  Test capabilities are provided by models from 500 VDC to 5000 VDC.  In contrast, manual meg-ohm meters can not provide the same range of testing, and consequently can provide results with only limited accuracy.
  6. MEG-alert Motor Guard is available in a wide range of models.  Single Motor Guard installations can be made to any critical motor.  Or multiple units can be combined to test several motors - up to nine motors per installation.  Motor Guard is compact and can be installed in the motor control cabinet.  Or it can be supplied with an optional cabinet for easier mounting in an alternative location.  Because of the low current DC output, Motor Guard can be installed thousands of feet from the motor - critical in the installations for submersible pumps!  Motor Guard is available for all motors: 480 volt, 2400 volt, 4160 volt and up to 7200 volts.

MEG-alert Motor Guard includes a starter lock-out function.  When the insulation resistance falls into the danger levels (depicted by the red range on the meg-ohm meter) the starting circuit is interrupted and the motor can NOT be started.  Workers (or remote contacts) can not start a motor that has unsafe insulation resistance levels.  Burnout of the motor at startup due to low insulation resistance is eliminated.  A grounded motor is guaranteed to burnout.  A motor protected by Motor Guard will be locked out, requiring maintenance personnel to reverse the dangerous condition causing the imminent burnout.  The danger level triggers a red flashing LED on the panel, and can also be used to trigger local and remote alarms.
  8. MEG-alert Motor Guard only requires a simple, one-time installation.  The most basic installations require only about one hour!  Motor Guard then eliminates hours of manual testing for the life of the motor!  Installations can be easily accomplished by plant electricians, or completed by local contractors.  Testing then becomes completely automatic and hands-off, eliminating the potential for human error and indifference.
